Ok, got in the car to start it, put the key in the ignition. Instead of engaging, the ignition switch spun woth each turn of the key, about 2-3 rotations forward and backward. The steering wheel never unlocked, and it did not start. I pulled the key out, put it back in, then it engaged and started as usual. The first try never sent a signal to

I went off to the shops in the morning and the engine was cranking slowly and then stopped. i took the key out and tried again and it started up fine. I got to the shops and turned the engine off and it was a normal turning off engine sound and the drive to the shops was also quite normal.
1. Weak Battery If your A4's engine won't crank or cranks very slowly, then the most likely culprit is weak or dead 12v battery. Investigating more closely and doing a battery voltage test will clarify whether the starting problem is due to the battery.
